Programs and Initiatives
This mini-conference aims to identify the levers and initiatives to activate and implement, including national programs led by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research, in Caribbean territories to stimulate research valorization and entrepreneurship among students and doctoral researchers.
The discussion panel following the presentations will allow participants to ask questions, submit proposals, and share their own experiences for collective insight.
The context set is the high quality of Caribbean scientific research but its lack of valorization.
The level and quality of Caribbean academic scientific research are very well-positioned, with numerous publications and high-value research and scientists of global significance.
For example, since October 2023, the University of the Antilles has been ranked among the world’s top higher education institutions in the prestigious Shanghai Ranking, thanks to the high quality of its research in ecology, a branch of environmental sciences.
The Shanghai Ranking is a series of rankings of the world's best universities. It has been established since 2017 by Jiao Tong University, located in the major Chinese city of Shanghai. This ranking evaluates the performance of higher education institutions in 55 scientific disciplines across 5 fields: engineering, natural sciences, life sciences, medicine, and social sciences.
However, policies and strategies for research valorization remain largely insufficient.
Few dedicated "university-business" services are identified, and the French Antilles lack national mechanisms such as Technology Transfer Acceleration Companies (SATT) or public research incubators.
However, this work of research valorization and technology transfer is crucial for the development of innovations, as well as the creation of impactful activities and businesses, in economic, environmental, and social terms.
The levers and mechanisms put in place by French public policies must therefore be better activated. And at the larger Caribbean scale, bringing together both French-speaking and English-speaking territories, some regions have developed effective and successful initiatives that can serve as inspiration.
